Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm inherited a financial crisis that put not just her state, but the entire American auto industry at risk. Her response to this crisis makes for a gripping account of grit and optimism, as her pragmatism collides with political gamesmanship and ideology. Through innovations that include private-public partnerships with clean energy businesses and auto companies, and a restructured workforce training program, Granholm’s efforts spurred more than $57 billion in private investment. In 2010, jobs grew at the fastest rate of any other state, and by the year 2020, new companies are expected to create nearly 90,000 jobs.

The last decade has not been kind to state budgets or the elected officials tasked with stretching them, often past the breaking point. Nobody knows this better than former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. Considered a rising star of Democratic politics when she was elected in 2002, for eight years Granholm oversaw a state wracked by the worst repercussions of the nation’s economic crises: from the lingering effects of the DotCom collapse and the bursting housing bubble to the near death of the state’s lifeblood, the automotive industry.

Now almost year removed from office, she believes all governments could learn valuable lessons from Michigan’s struggles. Please join us on Tuesday, Oct. 18th as the Sacramento Press Club welcomes Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who will candidly discuss her experiences guiding Michigan through the most challenging economic era since the Great Depression. Ms. Granholm will also share her views on what lawmakers should and should not do to create jobs and spur economic growth in an increasingly competitive global economy.

Note: Copies of her new book, “A Governor’s Story: The Fight for Jobs and America’s Economic Future,” which she co-authored with her husband Dan Mulhern, will also be available for purchase. Granholm and Mulhern will be signing copies after our regular Q&A session.

The Grand Plaza Halls
1025 Ninth Street, Sacramento
Registration: 11:30; Lunch begins at noon

Something rather astonishing has happened to the political list this weekend — not only is there an ideal number of 10 books on the list, but every last one is actually a current title, a book published within the last month. For countless weeks, the roundup has been a mix of up-to-the-minute and some rather old (at times really old) books. A sign of the new publishing season, no doubt.

And, there’s a prevalence of governors reflected below, from (former) Gov. Granholm of Michigan to (current) Gov. Daniels of Indiana, both with prescriptions for America’s ills, to (not quite one term and former) Gov. Sarah Palin, examined in a somewhat controversial book by journalist Joe McGinniss.

Jennifer Granholm was the two-term governor of Michigan, a state synonymous with manufacturing during a financial crisis that threatened to put all America’s major car companies into bankruptcy. The immediate and knock-on effects were catastrophic. Granholm’s grand plans for education reform, economic revitalization, clean energy, and infrastructure development were blitzed by a perfect economic storm.

Granholm was a determined and undefeated governor, who enjoyed close access to the White House at critical moments (Granholm stood in for Sarah Palin during Joe Biden’s debate preparation), and her account offers a front row seat on the effects of the crisis. Ultimately, her story is a model of hope. She hauls Michigan towards unprecedented private-public partnerships, forged in the chaos of financial freefall, built on new technologies that promise to revolutionize not only the century-old auto industry but Michigan’s entire manufacturing base. They offer the potential for a remarkable recovery not just for her state, but for American industry nationwide.

333. S. Grand Avenue, 54th Floor
Los Angeles, CA 90071

Read recent articles on Gov. Granholm
in the Los Angeles Times and New York Times

Jennifer M. Granholm was elected governor of Michigan in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. She was born in Vancouver, Canada, grew up in California, and is an honors graduate of both the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard Law School. She began her career in public service as a judicial clerk for Michigan’s Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. She became a federal prosecitor in Detroit in 1990. Granholm was elected Michigan’s first female attorney general in 1998. She is a regular panelist on Meet the Press.

The economic hurt that happened across America happened first, and most brutally, in America’s manufacturing heartland: Michigan. Jennifer Granholm, the state’s first female governor, tells how one state struggled and pioneered ways out of a perfect economic storm.

In January, 2002, Jennifer Granholm was the first woman ever to be sworn in as governor of Michigan—the eighth largest state in the nation, home to America’s auto industry, a state economy bigger than that of Saudi Arabia or Greece. She came into office with youthful energy, optimism, and a determination to jump-start progress on several fronts, from diversifying the state’s economy to reforming its educational system.

Then reality struck—in the form of an inherited fiscal crisis, economic collapse, and predictable yet unforeseen breakdowns from hospital systems to the energy grid.

In a A Governor’s Story, Granholm gives a first-hand account from the front lines of a series of battles that exploded first in Michigan and that now are sweeping across all America: the battle to repair health care, educational, and infrastructure systems suffering from decades of neglect; the battle to rebuild a manufacturing base crippled by dramatic technological changes and unfair foreign competition; and the battle to restore hope and fairness to an economic system in which the few prosper even as the many suffer.

A Governor’s Story is also a frank exploration of what happens when ideology and political gamesmanship collide with human needs. Michigan’s efforts to solve problems like devastating unemployment and out-of-control budget deficits demonstrated the bankruptcy of such traditional responses as “lower taxes,” “less regulation,” and “smaller government”—all of which accelerated, rather than reversed, the state’s decline.

She steered Michigan toward unprecedented private-public partnerships with clean energy businesses and the auto industry in a way to revolutionize its entire manufacturing base. She completely restructured workforce training through the No Worker Left Behind program.

Granholm shares revealing stories about politics, economics, and the often-misunderstood connections between them, A Governor’s Story offers vital lessons not just for policy makers and business leaders but for anyone seeking insight into the challenges facing America in today’s tough times.

James Flanigan is business columnist for the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and other publications, has covered national and international business and economics for 46 years. He has focused on every aspect of business and finance and examined in major articles the economies of countries stretching from Europe to Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and I don’t agree on a lot of things, politically, but I still enjoyed reading her new memoir A Governor’s Story (co-written with husband Dan Mulhern, and new out from PublicAffairsthis week).

When Granholm took over the helm of the state of Michigan in 2003, the car industry was enduring tough times. Everyone thought they were merely cyclical. The state budget was built on the assumption of a thriving manufacturing sector which would eventually return to health.

Over the next 8 years, however, this assumption proceeded to burn up like a Ford Pinto. Granholm would get multiple notices of mass layoffs every day, culminating in the 2009 GM and Chrysler bankruptcies. As Granholm writes, “The reality of manufacturing in America was undeniable. The jobs were gone, and they weren’t coming back.”
